Light reveals and conceals

내 화면에는 경계가 없고 구분이 없다. 다만 잡아 낸 형상이 있고 화면을 가득 채우고 있는
공간이 있을 뿐이다. 이렇게 선택되어 나온 화면은 빛을 통해 지각할 수 있다. 빛과 그림자는 항상 같이 존재하듯 세계는 표면과 이면을 함께 가지고 있다.

표면 너머를 보여주는 빛은 사물을 드러내는 힘과 감추는 힘으로 작용한다. 이 양가적 성격은 내가 탐구하는 핵심이 된다. 나는 안료를 쌓고 지워내는 과정을 통해 남음과 사라짐의 흔적을 기록한다. 사람들의 움직임 속에서 표면과 이면의 경계가 흐려지며 작품 사이를 지나다니는
그들의 몸에 나의 흔적이 입혀진다. 우리의 이면은 삶으로 나타나지만, 완벽히 닿을 수 없다. 나는 이 장면을 또 하나의 관람자로서 바라본다. 그저 존재하게 두고, 관람자와 함께 응시하는 시간을 만든다. 여기, 응시의 시간 속에서 작업은 세계와 나, 그리고 타인을 이어주는 열린 공간이 된다.

My screen has no boundaries or distinctions. Only captured forms exist, and the space filling the screen. This selected screen can be perceived through light. Just as light and shadow always coexist, the world possesses both surface and depth. Light revealing what lies beyond the surface acts as both a force that reveals and conceals objects. This dual nature is the core of my exploration. Through the process of layering and erasing pigment, I record traces of what remains and what vanishes. Amidst people's movements, the boundary between surface and underlying reality blurs, and my traces are imprinted upon their bodies as they pass between the works. Our underlying reality manifests as life, yet it remains utterly unreachable. I observe this scene as yet another viewer.

빛이 사물을 드러내듯이, 어둠은 사물을 감춤으로써 오히려 그것을 더 강하게 의식하게 만든다.
어둠 속 빛의 흔적들은 해독되지 않은 채 공간을 장악한다. 그 여백이 새로운 의미를 만들어낸다. 우리는 완전히 해석할 수 없는 것에 끌리며, 결국 그 본질을 온전히 파악하지 못한 채 서성이는 존재다. 어둠은 지운 듯하지만 모든 것을 열어두고, 빛은 드러나게 하지만 동시에 숨긴다.
우리는 그 속에서 지나온 순간을 더듬으며, 닿을 수 없는 시간들을 바라보는 행위를 반복한다.

일상은 언제나 ‘질문’으로 다가오며, 그에 대한 응답은 고정된 것이 아니라 끊임없이 변주되는 해석의 과정이다. 침묵조차 정답으로 작동하기도 하고, 때로는 오답처럼 보였던 사건이 시간이 흐른 뒤 의미 있는 응답으로 전환되기도 한다. 이처럼 경계는 유동적이며, 그 모호성은 오히려 새로운 의미를 산출한다. 나는 이러한 경계적 상태를 시각화하고자 한다. 그림자와 흔적, 여백은 부재인 동시에 응답의 형식이 된다. 작업은 단일한 해답을 제시하지 않는다. 관람자가 응답의 교차 속에서 스스로의 해석을 만들어내도록 여백을 남긴다. 이는 예술을 결과물이 아닌 지속적 탐구 과정으로 위치시키려는 나의 태도이자, 작업의 핵심 지향점이다.

Just as light reveals objects, darkness conceals them, thereby making us more acutely aware of their presence. Traces of light within the darkness dominate the space, undecoded. That very void creates new meaning. We are drawn to what we cannot fully interpret, ultimately lingering beings who never grasp its essence completely. Darkness seems to erase yet leaves everything open; light reveals yet simultaneously conceals. Within it, we repeatedly trace moments passed and gaze upon times beyond reach.
Daily life always approaches us as a ‘question,’ and the response to it is not fixed but an ever-changing process of interpretation. Shadows, traces, and margins become both absence and the form of response. The work does not present a single answer. It leaves margins for the viewer to create their own interpretation amidst the intersections of responses.

What you cannot call upon unless it is sincere

내 불안은 세계와 나 사이에 존재하는 틈에서 발생한다. 나는 통제 가능한 틀 안에서 변수가 발생하면 쉽게 휘청이고, 그 막막함은 오래도록 내 안에 남는다. 그런데 아이러니하게도, 이 막막함이야말로 진정한 영감이고 진심이 아니면 부르지 못할 것이라고 나는 믿는다. 작업은 그 감정의 진폭과 직접 마주하는 과정이다.
천 위에 비치는 빛과 그림자는 매 순간 달라지며 내가 통제할 수 없는 세계의 움직임을 드러낸다. 화면들은 바람, 빛의 방향, 관람자의 동선처럼 내 의도를 벗어나는 변수를 품고 흔들린다. 바로 그 예측 불가능한 떨림이 작업을 살아 있게 한다. 존재와 부재가 교차하며 잠시 머물렀다 사라지는 흔적들은, 불확실함이 새로운 층위를 열고 또 다른 감각을 불러온다는 사실을 보여 준다. 내가 붙잡고 싶은 것과 놓아야만 하는 것, 그 사이의 긴장이 결국 내가 바라보는 세계의 표면과 이면이다. 나는 그 미세한 균열과 흔들림을 화면 위에 머물게 하고, 막막함이 남긴 감정의 결을 나의 예술적 언어인 빛의 흔적으로 번역한다. 작업은 나에게 통제를 내려놓고, 예측할 수 없는 세계와 조용히 화해하는 방식이다.

My anxiety arises from the gap between the world and myself. When variables occur within a controllable framework, I easily falter, and that sense of helplessness lingers within me for a long time. Yet ironically, I believe this very helplessness is true inspiration, something that cannot be summoned without sincerity. The work is a process of directly confronting the amplitude of that emotion.
Light and shadow shifting across the canvas reveal the world's movements beyond my control, changing with every moment. The screens tremble, holding variables beyond my intent—like wind, the direction of light, or the viewer's path. Yet it is precisely this unpredictable tremor that brings the work to life. Traces that linger briefly before vanishing, where presence and absence intersect, show how uncertainty opens new layers and evokes different senses. The tension between what I wish to grasp and what I must let go ultimately defines the surface and the hidden depths of the world I observe. I allow those minute cracks and tremors to linger on the screen, translating the emotional texture left by bewilderment into traces of light—my artistic language. This work is my way of relinquishing control and quietly reconciling with an unpredictable world.
